‘you will be surprised by how many people get what you're saying’

(16:22 - 21:33)

A: When you work through the self, all you need is the self. Pre-COVID, we were so caught up in, I need this to do this or I need to make this in this way or this needs to be done like this. But I think this proved that when the work comes from you and is a reflection of yourself and you use what is around you to articulate yourself.. You don't need all this stuff or all this shit. You can make great work anywhere, just use what you have and work through it from a place of honesty and that will be reflected in what you make. And then also just realizing when people see your work you feel like, “Oh man, if I make something for myself and no one's gonna understand it,” but you will be surprised by how many people get what you're saying, or feel what you're saying.

B: Yeah. I think that's very true. In some ways, there is also this idea of saying,”Well, maybe you don't need all the ornament.”  What I mean by that, is that we can do with what we have, even if what we have is not a lot. Sure, it's great to have access to all these spaces, but also we can make do with what we have at our disposal, whatever that is. And that ultimately, we have agency in deciding how we want to express our ideas. And that doesn't mean that it's going to lack of anything because we didn't have the most beautiful piece of wood or whatever.

A: Did you feel that your project changed?

B: Yes, I think so. I think there was a sort of confusion in my project. I was jumping between the professional aspect of the project versus the instinctual aspect of it. I enjoy making things. Some people were saying that they I wanted to hold what I made, which brought up this question of how much do I want to share. Why am I making this? Is it so that people touch it or am I making this because I'm just getting pleasure from making it? I think to me is the latter. I believe it's very important to share things, but I also don't mind not letting people have access to it. I don't know if I need to indulge people's needs of holding the object you know?!
